This species, not introduced until 1948, occurs growing at very high elevations – up to 9,500 feet in northern Afghanistan. The completely opened flower forms a star. Their lovely colors and the fact that they naturalize easily make them a good choice for rock gardens. The petals of the cultivar ‘Cynthia’ are coral-red with a greenish edge and are light yellow on the inside.
