The most familiar kinds are daffodils, hyacinths and crocuses – not to mention tulips. Less well known but just as bright and cheery are Glory-of-the-Snow (Chionodoxa), Checkered Fritillary (Fritillaria), Siberian Squill (Scilla) and Striped Squill (Puschkinia). Planting flower bulbs

The best time to plant flower bulbs is in September/October. Garden centers, home improvement centers and various other sales channels offer a wide assortment of flower bulbs from September through mid-December. Planting them is as easy as 1, 2, 3: dig a hole about twice as deep as the bulb is tall, place the flower bulb or bulbs into the hole, and cover it back up with soil. After planting, give the flower bulbs some water to get them off to a good start.

Have fun using your imagination

You can try out just about anything with flower bulbs. Using one kind of flower bulb in one color to make sharply defined lines always works. Planting flower bulbs in among other newly budding flowers and plants creates a heart-warming effect. If you really want to steal the show, put your imagination to use by planting different kinds of flower bulbs in different colors to make circles, lines and rectangles. A few months later, when the bulbs start to flower, you can enjoy the first color of spring and look back on your bulb-planting get-together as a day well spent. What you’ll see then is sure to make a great picture to post on your social media.

Don’t forget

Rooting around in the dirt is always nice and gives a real sense of satisfaction. Before immersing yourself in flower bulb planting, however, don’t forget to write down which kinds you are planting. Write the names of the flower bulbs on plant labels (wooden ones, for example) before arranging the flower bulbs where you intend to plant them. It’s then easy to insert the labels into the soil where you have planted each kind of flower bulb so you will know exactly where each kind will come up next spring. This way, your social media friends will see you as a real flower bulb expert!
